Ghana legend Abedi Pele has backed the Black Stars to become the first ever African team to reach a World Cup semi-final.

Milovan Rajevac’s side face two-time winners Uruguay in Friday’s quarter-final at Soccer City and Pele, whose sons Ibrahim and Andre are both in the current squad, thinks they can get past the South Americans and make history for the African continent on the African continent.
The Ghanaians reached this stage after last Saturday’s extra-time success over the USA and Pele now says the whole continent is behind them as they go on to face Oscar Tabarez’s charges for the right to meet Brazil or Holland in the last four.

“I am very happy that we qualified for the quarter-finals,” Pele told GhanaSoccerNet.

“It’s a huge improvement given that we got knocked out in the second round in the last World Cup.

“The whole of South Africa and Africa is behind us and we have no choice but to go further.

“Football is not mathematics. We are strong and so are Uruguay. The game can go either way. This gives us the confidence that we can go further. I see Ghana going all the way to the final.”

Pele, however, said he was sad that none of the other five African finalists – Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and hosts South Africa – managed to get out of their groups, adding: “I am very happy about Ghana. I was happy that we had six teams at the World Cup.

“But only one advanced to the next round. I am a bit disappointed by African teams.”
