All is not well with the Jabulani

June 26th, 2010

In case you’re wondering what the Jabulani is, this Adidas ball is the official ball of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. According to their website, Jabulani means ‘to Celebrate’ in the isiZulu language.

Based on reports coming from The Huffington Post, FIFA has acknowledged that there might be something wrong with the ball but have indicated that there will be no action taken to correct any potential issues until after the World Cup.

This is clearly a cause of contention among players and goalies alike – Brazil’s ebullient coach Dunga got into a verbal confrontation with FIFA’s secretary general, Jerome Valcke, prior to the start of the tournament. Valcke was challenged to come out on to the pitch and control the ball.

Adidas has made the World Cup ball since 1970 and is contracted through 2014. The German company has defended the Jabulani, saying it doesn’t know what the fuss is about because all the qualified teams were given the ball before the tournament to test it.
