Shakhtar Donetsk close in on £6m deal for out-of-favour Arsenal striker Eduardo

July 19th, 2010

Shakhtar Donetsk are closing on a £6million deal for Arsenal’s Eduardo.

The Brazil-born Croatia striker has also attracted the attention of Aston Villa and Besiktas, but Shakhtar have the advantage of offering Champions League football and would pay the 27-year-old £50,000 a week.

Eduardo was pulled out of the pre-season friendly win at Barnet at the last minute on Saturday and is falling down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger hopes to add Joe Cole to attacking options that already include Robin van Persie, Marouane Chamakh, Andrey Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner.

Shakhtar, backed by a billionaire financier, are keen to strengthen for the Champions League and would ideally like to land a world-class forward such as Manchester City’s Robinho, Ajax star Luis Suarez or Oscar Cardozo of Paraguay.

But the signing of Eduardo is more achievable and could go some way to convincing captain Darijo Srna, a Chelsea target, to stay as the Croatia team-mates are friends.
