Manchester City start their summer tour with comfortable win in Portland

July 18th, 2010

Manchester City kicked off their summer tour of the United States with a 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.

City took control of the game with two goals in a minute just before half-time, with Stephen Ireland and Emmanuel Adebayor on target.

Brazilian Jo completed the scoring in the second half as City sealed a comfortable win.

Manager Roberto Mancini said: ‘The main thing is that we came through without any serious injuries and that is important.

‘I am sure the players were glad to get into action after two weeks of hard work and I thought we did well against a side that is progressing in the United States and which was well prepared and fought hard all night.

‘This was only a first step but a big one on the way to the start of the Premier League season.’

Their opponents will play Major League Soccer next season, but City will face stronger tests in the next couple of weeks.

They next face Sporting Lisbon in New York on Friday night.
