Five U-17 players in senior training squad

March 5th, 2011

Senior Reggae Boyz head coach Theodore Whitmore has called 26 local-based players to begin preparations for an international friendly game against South American outfit Venezuela at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on March 25. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm.

Included in the squad are five members of the Under-17 team that qualified for that age-group World Cup to be held in Mexico from June 18 to July 10. They are captain and midfielder Omar Holness, defender Alvas Powell, striker Jason Wright and goalkeepers Odean Clarke and Richard Trench.

According to a Jamaica Football Federation release, the two goalkeepers were included in “a conscious effort to improve further their technical competence and to ensure they remain active”.

“The other players are included as a means of continuing their preparation, extending their exposure and building their confidence… the Under-17 players will only attend training sessions in the evening so as to ensure they attend school,” the JFF’s media release stated.

Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens attacker Navion Boyd returns to the fold after a period absence due to injury, while St George’s SC defender Derval Gordon receives his first national call-up.

This camp, which starts tomorrow and ends on Thursday, is the first since the senior Boyz returned victorious from the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique last year and will be one of three in preparation for the game and will be used as “part of the continuing process of identifying and exposing talent”.

Whitmore, who was away on a three-week apprenticeship to “expand his coaching skills” at top clubs in Brazil, returns to the island today.

The game against 63rd-ranked Venezuela will be the first of the year for the 59th-rated Jamaicans, who were idle on the February 9 FIFA calendar date set aside for international friendly games.

JFF general secretary Horace Reid said in late January that the organisation was finding it difficult to secure a game for the February date because “the National Stadium was undergoing repair and all the teams that we are in discussion with have expressed the desire to travel”.
