Barcelona could rescue David Silva from Manchester City if the Spain midfielder continues to struggle at Eastlands.

The lightweight 24-year-old only signed on at City in the summer, but there are already question marks over his £24million move from Valencia.

Silva has struggled to recreate his La Liga form in England and, in contrast, impressed on international duty with Spain by scoring against Lithuania on Friday and playing a part in Tuesday’s 3-2 win in Scotland.

City boss Roberto Mancini has backed Silva to succeed once he has more time to work with the attack-minded midfielder, but reports in Catalonia say Barca are closely monitoring the situation.

Barcelona-based newspaper Sport say a bid could even be launched in January if they are given encouragement.

The champions of Spain, along with rivals Real Madrid, have long tracked Silva and Pep Guardiola’s side were close to taking him to the Nou Camp before City made their move.

Barca were blown off course by their botched attempt to sign Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal and it remains to be seen whether they will deprive the Gunners of their captain any time soon.
