WASHINGTON (AP) — Luton Shelton scored twice to lead Jamaica past El Salvador 2-0 in an exhibition Wednesday night.
Ryan Johnson assisted Shelton’s second goal to help the Jamaicans seal a potential confidence-boosting victory ahead of back-to-back World Cup qualifying matches against the United States in September.
Eliseo Quintanilla created most of the opportunities for El Salvador, which failed to translate a friendly crowd into a positive result before its return to qualifying.
In the third round of that qualifying, Jamaica (1-1-0) sits second behind the United States in Group 1 on goal difference, and will face the U.S. in Kingston on Sept. 7 and Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 11. El Salvador (0-1-1) is third in Group 2 behind Mexico and Honduras, and will play home and away against Guyana over the same five days.
