Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) General Secretary Horace Reid says they are looking into the possibility of inviting Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge to join up with the Reggae Boyz ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, which will begin next year.
Sturridge, who is also a former England Under-17 and Under-21 player, was in striking form last weekend, netting two goals -including the opener – in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League (EPL).
“We have asked one of our representatives in the UK to speak to and, if possible, interview him so as to ascertain his linkages to Jamaica and interests in playing for the country,” Reid told The Gleaner yesterday.
“I saw during an interview on TVJ a couple of months ago, while he was on holidays here in Jamaica, and gave the impression that he would consider representing the country.
“So it’s about exploring the possibilities as he is a very good player, and having watched that television interview, I was left with the distinct impression that everything about him is Jamaican,” Reid declared.
The 22-year-old Sturridge, who is understood to have ties to Jamaica as a result of his grandparents, has so far scored three goals in three appearances for Chelsea this season in the EPL, and one in his only UEFA Champions League appearance thus far.
“If England calls him, it would be confirmation of his talent as coach Fabio Capello knows the type of players he wants. But we are hopeful that if he is eligible and is interested, he will choose us,” Reid said of the Aston Villa youth academy graduate, who was also a former Coventry City and Manchester City star.
