JAMAICA’s Reggae Boyz set date with Peru next month

August 18th, 2010

JAMAICA’s Reggae Boyz will face South American outfit Peru in a friendly international in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on September 7, subject to US Soccer Federation’s approval for the promoters to proceed.

Both associations are said to have agreed to terms, “but we are awaiting the green light from US Soccer in granting permission” for the game to go on.

“We have signed off on the game with Peru… everything is in place and we are only just awaiting US Soccer for the official go ahead,” said JFF president Captain Horace Burrell yesterday.

The game will be played just two days after the Boyz engage CONCACAF rivals Costa Rica in another friendly inside the National Stadium as the JFF continues its preparation for the Digicel Caribbean Cup and ultimately the World Cup qualification campaign for Brazil 2014.

Peru, a western South American country of 29 million people, had a miserable finish in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying play-offs, and like Jamaica, have kick-started their rebuilding early, also with the shared goal of Brazil in mind.

The Boyz team for this game is expected to be made up of home-based players, some from the US leagues and continental Europe.

“We expect to have a very strong team for this match-up, and at the same time we will continue to expose new talent with our more experienced players… though winning is not everything, but it is very crucial, so we will want to follow up that win in Trinidad with victories against Costa Rica and then Peru,” Burrell noted.

According to the FIFA 2010 calendar, September 7 is designated as a date for official competition matches.

According to eloratings.com, the game would be the second meeting between the two nations, who first met back in November 2006 in a friendly that ended 1-1 at ‘The Office’.

Peru, ranked 43 places above Jamaica on the FIFA listing, last qualified for a World Cup Finals back in 1982 at the Spain-hosted edition. The Boyz, on the other hand, had their only World Cup appearance at the France 1998 tournament.

Jamaica, in their last international friendly, looked an efficient bunch in dispatching fierce rivals Trinidad and Tobago’s Soca Warriors 3-1 in the twin-island republic last Wednesday.

So far this year, the Boyz have had only three prior practice matches — Canada in January, Argentina in February and South Africa in May.
